The real deal

This is it! A super green smoothie. After reading a few recipes I decided to bite the bullet and try, just try, a smoothie with avocado and spinach as key ingredients. My taste-buds weren’t quite jumping for joy a the prospect but I plopped all the ingredients in my blender and it actually tasted great. So great in fact that I would go make another right now but I am simply too full after my first.

The Green Thing

Juice of one lime

Green grapes, a small handful 

Frozen blueberries, a small handful

A sprig of mint leaves, torn up

Half an avocado

A cup of fresh spinach leaves

1/2 c. coconut water (add more to make the smoothie to a consistency you like)

1 tsp of chia seeds

Blend together, adding the chia seeds once the smoothie is at your required consistency. Let the smoothie stand for 5-10 minutes to allow the chia seeds to absorb and swell. Drink and enjoy!

Paleo: ‘Purple Citrus & Sweet Perfume’

Opening up my blog for the first time in ages yesterday lead me to where I left off, trying out key recipes from Silvena Rowe’s book Purple Citrus & Sweet Perfume. So curiosity demanded I pull it off the bookshelf to see if I could find any ‘Laura Suitable Food’ within its pages.

I was pleasantly surprised.

Sweet Roasted Peppers on Smoked Aubergine Puree

Cumin-scented Broth of Celeriac, Summer Squash and Orange

That’s not even all of the recipes that fit the bill, there are many more I haven’t listed and many more that could be tweaked. So perhaps a cook book series is not off the cards in the blogging future.

And yes, I have discovered my bottle of pomegranate molasses is sugar free! Huge sigh of relief!

Upside down

I’d like to say I’m jumping back on the blog band wagon because I’m inspired. Rather I feel like a carpet has been pulled out from under my feet. Food for me is changing. I’ve always considered myself a health conscious food lover, but for reasons related to my health and needing to boost my immune system I’m making some big changes.

The IN foods:

  • meat/seafood/eggs
  • vegetables
  • fruits & berries
  • nuts & seeds
  • fats – olive oil, nut oils, coconut oil & animal fats


  • fermented dairy eg yoghurt 
  • honey/dark chocolate
  • small amounts of gluten free grain

The NO Foods

  • Wheat and gluten containing grains
  • Refined Sugar
  • Overly Processed foods
  • Food additives eg artificial flavours/colour/preservatives

I pulled out my baking draw today and said good bye to my copious amounts of flour and sugar…. seriously half of my pantry will no longer be in use.

And so my adventure in the “Land of No Bread or Pasta” begins!
